Install or startup failures
Stuck on setup before writing a line of business code
The prompt
I am stuck setting up the environment. What I am trying to do: {{e.g. start the dev server}} Command: {{paste it}} Full output: ``` {{paste the complete terminal output, not just the last line}} ``` Environment: - OS: {{e.g. macOS 15 / Windows 11}} - Versions: {{e.g. Node v22.11.0 / Python 3.11}} - Package manager: {{npm / pnpm / pip}} - Where the project came from: {{cloned from GitHub / initialized myself}} Please: 1. Explain what this output is complaining about. 2. Give the most likely cause and fix, one at a time. I will run it and report back. 3. For version conflicts, say clearly whether to upgrade or downgrade, and why. Rules: - Do not tell me to delete node_modules and reinstall unless it is genuinely necessary - it is slow. - Give me a command that verifies whether this step succeeded.
Replace the {{}} parts with your own content
Why it works
- Setup output is long and scary; making AI translate it first tells you instantly if you are on the wrong track
- One fix at a time instead of a command dump means you know which change actually worked
- Saying whether to upgrade or downgrade avoids generic advice that does not fit your project
- Constraining "delete node_modules" keeps the brute-force fix as a last resort, not the opener
What it looks like
When next dev fails on a Node version mismatch, AI points at the engines field and gives you an nvm use command rather than a reinstall.
Where it bites
- Pasting only the final error line - the real clue is usually in the warnings above it
- Not stating OS and versions, so the fix may be for a completely different platform
