Build your own version of a reference
You saw a site or feature you like - have AI rebuild a working version
The prompt
I want to build my own version modeled on {{reference name or link}}. Reference (link / screenshot / description): {{paste it}} What I most want to reproduce: {{the specific features or visuals, 3 max}} My stack: {{e.g. Next.js + Tailwind}} Help me like this: 1. Break the reference down: what blocks/modules is it made of, and what does each do? 2. Point out what is core (it only looks right if you copy this) vs decoration (can wait). 3. Give me a first version that actually runs, on my stack. 4. Tell me explicitly what I must NOT copy - copyright, their private APIs, or fundamentally different tech. Rules: - I want "modeled on", not "identical to". Structure and visuals can be inspired; copy, brand and data must be mine. - For uncertain implementation details, give me 2 options with tradeoffs instead of picking for me.
Replace the {{}} parts with your own content
Why it works
- Deconstructing first stops AI from copying only the surface - looks similar, behaves nothing alike
- Separating core from decoration gives v1 a focus instead of trying to do everything at once
- Asking what not to copy surfaces copyright and API-dependency traps, the biggest blind spot in clone requests
- "Give me 2 options" keeps the decision yours instead of inheriting AI's default
What it looks like
Modeling a party-game app on CardYard AI, AI first extracts the four core modules (draw, prompt, timer, results), flags the skin shop as decoration, then writes runnable v1 code.
Where it bites
- Dropping a bare link and saying "build this" gets you a wall of description, not runnable code
- Ignoring the copyright line and lifting their copy and assets is a launch risk
