Playful Illustration

You might say

Make it more playful with fun illustrations and characters. Don't make it too serious.

Use distinctive character, shape, and feedback to make a product feel friendly and alivePlayful illustration is a visual direction that builds brand character through illustrated people, scenes, and exaggerated forms; it is more specific than using bright color or large rounded corners. It often pairs with expressive but clear typography and light motion, working well for learning, creative, and young consumer products. Illustration cannot excuse weak information or unclear interaction states.

Design Principles
  • Design one recognizable character voice: color, type, illustration, and copy should express the same personality
  • Reserve exaggeration for emphasis: a headline, success response, or hero illustration can lead while other areas stay calm
  • Rounded does not mean vague: buttons, inputs, and states still need clear boundaries and labels
  • Let motion explain cause and effect: completion, dragging, and progress can feel elastic without slowing the task

When NOT to use it

  • Make every element bounce, rotate, and change color; constant interruption erases priority
BOUNCE! POP! WOW!Every element shouts at the same volume
  • Confuse childish treatment with friendliness; adults enjoy lightness without being spoken down to

  • Use bright text with weak contrast; vivid surfaces still need a stable reading layer
